Yellowstone has been a popular tourist destination for over 135 years ever since it was established. Of the many parks in existence in the United States, Yellowstone is the oldest, drawing approximately 3 million visitors annually. It is a spectacular place to be and quite mystical. It’s also a place that promises wonderful discoveries at every turn. If you’re visiting Yellowstone for the first time, here are adventure tips you can use to maximize your trip:
Hiking
The best way to experience Yellowstone is to hike from one location to the next. However, remember that there is a wide expanse of wilderness for you to explore and to try to fit all the sights in just one go would be ineffective.
A good thing to do is to choose the hikes that fit your preference and capability. To avoid becoming overwhelmed, a good hiking trail to use is Washburn Spur. It starts at Dunraven Pass to end with a spectacular view of Mt. Washburn and Glacial Boulder. The trail up Mt. Washburn offers unending views of incredible beauty, so bring a camera with you. You can capture images of wildlife such as marmots, red foxes and bighorn sheep along the way.
The Yellowstone view
Yellowstone is an endless feast for the senses and there’s plenty to drown yourself in. There are over 1,000 miles of trails here that are excellent for horseback riding and hiking. There are also numerous streams and lakes that offer excellent opportunities for fishing and boating.
And of course, there’s the view. Even if you don’t leave your car, you can simply drive along the Grand Loop, which curves within the area for a good 140 miles. But why limit yourself? The adventure is in the exploration of the park itself.
Easily some of the most popular destinations are the geysers, found mostly in the western area of the park. The most famous of these is Old Faithful, so named because it erupts in regular intervals of 30 – 90 minutes. The Old Faithful area also offers skinny-skiing in winter, a unique experience that is also offered by the Yellowstone Institute for beginners and experienced adventurists.
There are also numerous hot springs within the park, famous for their terraces and cones. The most popular of these is Mammoth Hot Springs, which has the highest peak at 90 m.
Another adventure you shouldn’t miss during a visit to Yellowstone is wildlife spotting. First-timers are often treated to incredible sightings of animals big and small including bison, coyotes, elk, bighorn sheep, squirrels and eagles. And with the reintroduction of gray wolves in the park, there is so much to see. Bring a good pair of binoculars and a camera with a decent zoom lens.
If you want to learn a little about history, the park also maintains a number of landmarks and places of interest.
Getting involved
If you want a more interactive adventure trip, sign up for classes at the Yellowstone Institute. Classes revolve around teaching students outdoor skills such as tracking, fishing, horseback riding, camping and wildlife photography. There are also courses that introduce students to the history and unique ecosystem of Yellowstone. If you can spare the time, these courses are well worth it.

Why Choose Extreme Sports
The TV in your living room is starting to collect dust and burn less electricity while the video game system sits in the corner doing the same. It is exactly what you may have wanted all along, but it does mean that your child is likely deep into the fun that is extreme sports. Don’t let the name fool you, extreme sports can be used to describe a number of activities, but for your child, it is likely BMX biking, skateboarding, or trickblading (tricks on roller blades specially made for the job).

Essentially, a trickblader will use a special type of roller blades that have smaller thicker wheels, wider boots, and what is called a grind plate that allows them to slide across surfaces when so desired. Falls are a part of the sport, but with proper protection your child will be in no more danger than on the football field or basketball court.
One problem that extreme sport kids have is finding a place to practice their new love. Many parks no longer allow extreme sports in the area, but the children need places to jump, grind, and try out new tricks. One solution that many cities have adopted is to erect extreme sport skate parks. In these facilities, ramps, half pipes, and even stairs and rails are provided so that kids can jump, grind, and get air all they want in an area free of traffic and pedestrians. This makes it safer, and in many ways more fun for the kids overall.

Future of Extreme sports are the wave of the future. Though you may not always understand these new sports your kids are into, they are still active and healthy sports. Competition is alive, but they may be perfected without 9 others or even one other kid around. A trip to the skate park alone can end in the perfection of new trick or technique. The idea is to just support your kids and allow them to compete how they want to. Get them the right safety gear and the right facilities and before you know it you may just have a world -class competitor on your hands.

Anyone want to go on a genuine adventure?
I live in Northern California… And with the world the way it is…. 2012, recession, just everything… I have decided that it would be a great reprieve to just leave it all, for a long while… I am planning to buy a couple of horses in Texas and ride south. My fiance is going with me, but I thought that it might be a great opportunity for some others who may feel the same way that I do. My fiance and I have been to both Ecuador and Guatemala and would like to travel that far south, at least. If you want to tag along we will start with online communication and then we can talk over the phone… I am estimating about a $700 expense. I am hoping to leave in mid to late July…. Please answer if you are interested. Individuals and couples both welcome.

Good vacation for two for under $2,000?
I recently graduated from college and as a graduation present my mother is taking me on a trip, as I love to travel. I live in Virginia, but I don’t want to do any domestic vacations as I just went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and Dallas for new years… Also, not Mexico, I was just there for a month this past summer and traveled pretty much the whole central area (Acapulco, Puebla, Cholula, Taxco, Cuernavaca, Teotihuacan, La Ciudad de Mexico, Tepotzlan, etc…).
She said the budget (including airfare) is around $2,000-2,500, but she doesn’t really want to do a cruise, SO, what are some great destinations where we could spend under that amount?
I LOVE adventure and culture, so anywhere I can explore or be outside is wonderful… my mom on the other hand likes resorts and the beaches, and will probably just want to relax. About 1-2 weeks is the length we’re looking at.

What Not to Do While Traveling Internationally
I’ve been lucky enough to have been able to travel to a number of foreign countries, and in doing so, I’ve learned a lot about airline travel. Most people know what to expect when flying, and are pretty well versed in what to do. But when you’re traveling internationally, there are a few important things to remember NOT to do in order to keep your trip running smoothly:
DON’T assume that check in time will be the same as domestic flights
When flying domestically, the airlines tell you that you should get to the airport two hours early. Most experienced domestic fliers know that this isn’t really the case. You can almost always get away with just an hour before your flight time. Not true with international flights. When the airlines say three hours early, they mean it. Not only are you more likely to get pulled out in the security line, but international flights are almost always bigger. More people = more problems. Baggage issues, check in issues, seat issues , all more likely with international travel. Also, if you miss your domestic flight, you can usually wrangle another. If you miss an international flight, you’re risking messing up connecting flights and expensive foreign hotel reservations. When flying internationally, always arrive three hours early.
DON’T check more bags than you need to
Flying internationally almost always means taking connecting flights. For this reason, many people like to check bags that they could otherwise carry on so that they won’t have to carry anything through another airport when they change flights. Bad idea. Connecting flights mean there’s a much greater chance that your checked bags will be lost or, at the very least, rerouted. This is a problem when you arrive in Bangkok for your jungle trek but you’re walking shoes are in the baggage claim area at Dallas-Fort Worth. If you can carry on, do it. Don’t check unnecessary luggage
DON’T schedule connecting flights too close together
No one likes layovers, and it may be tempting to book flights as little as 45 minutes apart. Not only are you running the risk of missing an important connection, but many people also forget that they will have to go through customs in the first city they arrive in. I once flew from London to Washington, DC and was supposed to have a connection on to Los Angeles. I HATE waiting in airports, and gave myself only a one hour window to make my connection. The London flight was on time, and I thought I was golden, but I forgot about customs. As I stood in line, waiting to declare my Harrod’s purchases, I watched the minutes tick away, and knew exactly when my flight to LA was taking off without me. Always give yourself at least two hours between flights — nothing is worse than having to spend the night at the airport after you’ve just spent 8 hours on a plane
Most Importantly…
Don’t forget to relax! International flights are long, and the possibility that something could throw you off schedule can be stressful. Just give yourself time and remember that missing a flight or losing a bag is not the end of the world. It’s just another part of your adventure.
