Adventure Travel Questions:
Where should I study in Ontario, Canada? Halifax, London or Guelph?

So I am a 21yo Australian male looking to study abroad at the start of 2011 with some fine Canadian people.

The partner institutions to my uni are located in the afformentioned cities, (Dalhousie University, University of Western Ontario, University of Guelph) any info on these campuses/cities would be awesome.

Academically, any is a good choice. Dalhousie, Guelph and UWO are all good schools. Various specialties at each.

As for location, London is close enough to Toronto that you could bus there for a weekend or concert event. Guelph is close enough that you could bus in for an afternoon.

Halifax is a 2-3hr flight from Toronto, or an 18hr drive, but it is an urban center itself. Not sure if you’re one of those Ausie’s who thinks 18hrs is a short drive or not.

Personally, I’m from the Maritimes originally and would prefer to recommend Halifax. It’s a very cool place, with an endemic rock and roll / blues tradition. Also heavily Scottish Celtic folk, which influences the rest of the scene. Ashley MacIsaac – Canada’s most famous punk Celtic folk rocker (for example) would be a fixture in Halifax. From my experience and from the Australians I’ve known, they would fit better in Nova Scotia than in Toronto. Serious when it counts, know how to party and laugh when it’s time to let go. Halifax has five universities, is a business town, capital of NS, marine/naval influence, is the major city in a farming/fishing region.

You say you’re into culture, exploring and adventure. You’ll get more interesting and particularly Canadian culture in NS than in Toronto. Toronto is the world’s third largest Italian city after Milan and Rome. They have the largest ethnic Chinese community in North America. The Brampton suburb is known as little Pakistan. Twenty five percent of the work force is foreign born. Toronto has world culture yes – and to some degree is a great example of the Canadian “mosaic” cultural approach. Halifax is Nova Scotia’s largest city. You’ll have a good international mix from Dalhousie, but the culture you’ll find most Canadian and entertaining will be the local one.

London is the same size as Halifax (roughly) it’s born out of UWO, southern Ontario insurance community, outlying farming community. Not as interesting (to me) as Halifax.

Guelph is much smaller than Halifax, mostly support for a farming community with some high tech that has spilled over from neighbouring Waterloo. Guelph is most famous for its veterinary school. You might meet some interesting Mennonite or Amish people around Guelph, and you’ll be within drive in distance of the big city.

Traveling out of NS is more difficult. You won’t find deep discount fares to Europe or the US like you might in Toronto. But, there’s lots to see in the region to keep you busy for a summer or two. You could certainly buy an older car and travel Cape Breton, PEI, NB, Newfoundland, down the eastern seaboard to Boston and NYC. Or go to the last surviving French colony in North America. It’s an interesting place.
